One thing I like to accomplish every year during the colder months is personal photo catch up. Because spring, summer and fall keep me focused on client work, months can pass before I am able to dive into the archives of my own family images. Last week I promised myself that I would tackle the thousands of photos I took in July. Photography has a remarkable ability to stir up memories and take us back in time and place. Seeing these for the first time, almost a year later, I’m reminded how fun and full of adventure our past summer was. If you’re looking for an exciting place to take your kids that’s close to home but a world away, look no further than NYC. Our kids’ first trip to New York City was definitely a highlight of theirs and our summer!
We kicked off our New York City adventure with a Circle 42 sunset sightseeing cruise. It was a great way to pack in must see sights like the Brooklyn Bridge, Freedom Tower, and of course the Statue of Liberty. The kids were in awe watching the city come alive with lights at night.
Though one kid in particular was ready to call it an early night. All of this sightseeing after a long drive made Daddy’s lap the best seat in the city.
After a good night’s sleep, they were full of energy and ready to take on the city.
We spent hours just touring around Central Park. There were playgrounds to play in, ducks to feed, and performers to watch. One highlight for me was visiting the stunning Bethesda Terrace and fountain.
Quite possibly my favorite personal photo of the year is pictured below. It was taken by our six year old son, if you can believe it!
Not my favorite part of the city by any stretch of the imagination, but our kids wanted to see what Times Square was like. The giant baby just about sums it up, no?
The next morning we explored the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. What a cool place. I highly recommend! The view of the city from the flight deck, surrounded by classic war planes…
After walking many east/west “long blocks” in the blazing sun, we found a nice spot to relax for lunch.
Speaking of the heat, on the way home we stumbled upon this spray park. Lack of a bathing suit couldn’t stop our son from stripping down to his undies and enjoying the refreshing cool with reckless abandon. Next trip we will pack them so we can all join in on the fun.
