I had my heart set on the Ice Castles.  Aside from a few iPhone snapshots, I had not taken photos of my children for months.  This was not an oversight that I can blame on a busy life.  The truth is, I didn’t feel inspired. As the guilt of this rut sunk in more and more, so did the pressure I put on myself to make up for lost time with something elaborate. The Ice Castles would be my chance, I thought.  I could buy a fur shawl or dress the kids up so they looked straight out of a fairy tale.  That would inspire me, surely. It had to. Right? Dusting off my camera, I went online to buy our tickets only to find them sold out for the remainder of the season.  The skies were blue.  The sun was shining.  And I felt nothing but more discouragement.

I allowed myself to wallow for a few minutes and then it hit me.  Elaborate themed photography has never been the kind of work that’s spoken to me – both in my own work and with the photographers I deeply admire.  I rarely use props.  I’ve never brought an upholstered antique couch into the forest.  And while I do believe a well planned wardrobe is an important element of any portrait, I’m not much of a frilly princess dress kind of person anyway.

I am inspired by light.  By feelings.  By connections.  By heart. When I look at my favorite photographs, these are the elements in tune.  And these can be found in our own backyards if we are present. So while I really do want to see those Ice Castles someday, finding my inspiration to shoot again came from a little bit closer to home this time. 🙂
